  36.         I don't know much about finances, but couldn't a lot of these "losses"
  37. be actually just expenses incurred on the development of the new systems that
  38. are about to be released and that Atari will compensate for this with the
  39. increase in sales projected for the new systems.  I would say Atari will easily
  40. make this up with the sale of the new systems.

  91. Has anyone come in contact with a program to convert so-called EasyDraw
  92. metafiles into so-called standard metafiles?  They both use the .GEM extension
  93. but most of the programs I have only accept/produce one form or the other.
  94. If anyone has any knowledge of such a beast please let me know.  I have access
  95. to GEnie and anonymous FTP.  If someone has it and it's in the public domain,
  96. please mail me a copy or, if the demand is high enough, post it to

  172. I got icone2 from the panarthea archives yesterday, but was unable to
  173. unarc it so that it would work.  I was able to get icone.acc, icone.rsc,
  174. and icones.rsc, but I would only get bombs when the acc would try to
  175. load.  Has anyone ever used this acc?  Thanks.

  219. Not a comment on rentals, directly, but not all local dealers are as helpful
  220. as indicated above.  While we are lucky enough to have one here, and even
  221. though I am quite a good customer (ie I try to support him buy buying
  222. hardware and software from him), when I asked to see a demo of a program that
  223. he had for sale to see if it was worth the money, he told me that he'd be
  224. glad to let me try it out on his machines IF I PURCHASED IT FIRST!  In other
  225. words, I had to BUY it before I could demo it (and they have a no return
  226. policy on software except for defective disks, which they exchange).  This
  227. was at our authorized Atari retailer--the other stores that sold Atari
  228. software solved the problem nicely by not having any Ataris around at all,
  229. so that you also had to buy it before trying it out.

  263. I, for one, am sick of buying stuff that doesn't work.  For example, I
  264. bought Publishing Partner back in the old days.  The first upgrade means
  265. that it sort-of worked.  I then bought a PageStream upgrade that broke in
  266. the first 5 minutes.  The story continues.

  268. After much wasted time and money, a friend "loaned" me a copy of Ventura
  269. Publisher.  I worked with it for a week - time enough to learn about it
  270. and find out that it does what I need to do and does it properly.  So, I
  271. bought it.

  273. I have a copy of PC-Write.  It is ShareWare.  I do most of my text entry
  274. on UNIX but if I decide to do some on DOS using PC-Write I will "buy" it.
  275. Why?  Because I have had a chance to test it out and it does what I want
  276. for a fair price.

  281. Probably because software manufactures don't offer the correct alternative
  282. - a 30 day return policy.  Raima corporation offered such a policy.  I
  283. evaluated their product and decided not to use it.  The result is that I
  284. can say very nice things about it.  It did what it was supposed to do but
  285. not what I wanted.  If I had been stuck with it I would be telling
  286. everyone what a bad product it is.

  288. I purchased an evaluation copy of Progress.  It did what I wanted and I
  289. bought the real copy.  I have been using it for about 3 years and they
  290. have made close to $10,000 off of me.  If it hadn't been for the $99
  291. elvaluation copy I am sure I would have never bought the product.

  293. My point is that there are two kinds of people: the ones that swipe
  294. software and the ones that pay for what they use.  It is too bad that
  295. those of us who are willing to pay for what we use become the victims of
  296. marketing plans that attempt to prevent software theft.  The theft will
  297. continue anyway.

  299. I can rent a Ford to see if that is the kind of car that I want to drive.
  300. I can "try out" a job before I agree to work somewhere for the next 5
  301. years and/or the rest of my life.  I expect the same with regard to my
  302. purchase of software.  Yes, I know it is easier to swipe but that isn't my
  303. problem.  Maybe if vendors would offer a little added value with the
  304. purchase, like decent support, people would understand the advantage of
  305. purchase.
